Can you believe that I have been blogging about our church’s JAZZ NATIVITY for 8 YEARS now?! 8 YEARS. That just blows my mind. I couldn’t remember all of the songs that I’ve sung if I tried! It all seems like a beautiful blur. This has been one of my favorite traditions since Michael and I got married. If you’re thinking this is your standard church “Christmas program”, think again! Jazz Nativity is far from anything you’ve probably ever seen a church do during Christmas season… especially a church in the suburbs!
It may seem like a shock that our church puts on something like this but honestly, it all started over a decade ago when one creative person decided to take a risk and try something new. Over the years, Jazz Nativity grew and grew and grew. Thousands of people attend this show each year and it’s an honor to be a part of it! Enjoy this little recap and don’t miss an announcement at the end!
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU :
Please remember that I’m pregnant and this song was NOT written for a pregnant lady to sing! I’m CLEARLY running out of breath at the end!
PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART:
Jazz Nativity exists to raise money to help support starving children around the world. We work with an organization called Feed My Starving Children and as a church, we have packed over 1.3 MILLION meals because of the funds raised through this show! It’s amazing and an honor to be a part of!
JESUS WHAT A WONDERFUL CHILD:
This song was so much fun, but this wasn’t my best performance. The best one was the last performance that we didn’t record (of course!) but even though this time involved a few squeaks, I had a blast singing with Giles and that choir! Again… I’m looking forward to NOT being pregnant next year for Jazz Nativity. I’ve been pregnant THREE years in a row!!
Friends, I have some exciting news. For the past 9 months or so, Michael and I have been a part of a core team of friends who feel like God is calling us to start a brand new service at our church. This time last year, we didn’t know if our church was for us anymore. We started specifically praying about whether or not we should find another one. We were missing community, our church was lacking in a lot of areas that are important to us, and we desperately wanted to be able to worship and sing in a modern setting. We knew that we needed an aspect of our church that we felt comfortable inviting ANYONE, without it feeling overly “church-y”and unwelcoming to someone who may not be used to a church setting.
A brand new service and community called “NEXUS” was born throughout this past year. We are SO excited that THIS SUNDAY, it’s launching in the gym at 10:45am! If you’re in Richmond and you’re not actively involved in a church of your own, we’d love to have you. If you’re in the area and you follow us, and you’ve honestly never even considered going to church or really fought to figure out what you believe, we’d love to have you. If you’re any age, from any background, any history, any story, any struggle…. this is for you.
We were never supposed to do life alone, fully depending on ourselves to figure everything out and wading through the mess of life without any guidance. God never wanted that life for us. Maybe you’re reading this and you have such strange connection to what I’m saying. Don’t ignore that…. God is constantly in the business of seeking out those that He loves if they will only be still enough to listen. Maybe you’ve read and followed our story this year. You know that life has been hard… it’s be challenging…. it hasn’t been the story that we wanted…. but we know that God hasn’t forgotten us… in fact, it’s the exact opposite. He sees us right where we are…. and He sees you where you are and longs to know you more.
For those who are local and can join us this Sunday, this is a song that we’ll be singing. I’ve known it for a long time… but it means a lot more after what we’ve walked through in the last 9 months. He is FOR us…. not AGAINST us. That one line of truth changes everything about life.
Michael and I love you all. Thanks for reading and being a part of our lives.
xoxoxo, Katelyn
