This week, Michael is sitting down with me at the microphone to join me on the podcast! When we started our Acton Academy journey, we had big dreams and very little idea of the practical challenges that lay ahead. Today, in year three of running our own Acton Academy, Michael and I are thrilled to reflect on the incredible transformation we’ve seen in our learners, our community, and even our own perspectives on education.
Acton Academy is a unique, learner-driven school model that encourages students to be in charge of their own education. With no tests, grades, or traditional teachers, Acton operates on a philosophy that prioritizes independence, resilience, and character development in young learners. Instead of teachers, Acton has “guides,” who are not allowed to answer students’ questions directly. This approach empowers learners to take ownership of their journey, exploring resources, and leaning on each other rather than an authority figure.
Each day starts with a Socratic discussion, fostering critical thinking and respectful communication, followed by individual goal-setting for core skills like reading, math, and writing. This setup helps learners set their own benchmarks for success and hold themselves accountable, developing life skills that extend far beyond academics.
Our search for a new approach to education was sparked by our desire to find a school environment that encouraged creativity, independence, and self-motivation. We wanted a space where our children—and other children in the community—could learn at their own pace, explore their natural curiosity, and grow in an environment free from the constraints of traditional schooling.
In Acton, we found a model that fit this vision perfectly. Inspired by Courage to Grow, a book by Acton co-founder Laura Sandefer, we felt a profound sense of connection to Acton’s approach. It resonated with our desire for a balanced learning environment where academic achievement is valued, but equally important is the development of character, empathy, and grit.
As we reflect on the first three years of running our Acton Academy, it’s incredible to see how much has changed—and how much we’ve learned!! Initially, we had to adapt to a new way of thinking about education, letting go of many preconceived notions. We questioned whether this approach would truly work and if our learners would thrive in this unstructured format. But as we enter year three, we are seeing the impact of Acton’s method and are more confident than ever.
Here are some major highlights from our journey so far:
With three years under our belt, we’re excited for the future and have big dreams for expanding our Acton Academy. Currently, we’re working to find a larger campus to accommodate more learners as we continue to grow. Our ultimate goal is to create a sustainable, learner-driven environment for students from elementary through high school, allowing them to experience the Acton model throughout their formative years.
We’re proud of how far we’ve come, from that initial vision inspired by Courage to Grow to the thriving community we have today. For any parent questioning the traditional education path, we encourage you to consider Acton and its commitment to lifelong learning, personal responsibility, and character development. Whether you’re looking to join an Acton school or simply exploring alternative education models, know that there’s a place where children are encouraged to be curious, resilient, and genuinely excited to learn.
If this sounds like the right approach for your child, we highly recommend reading Courage to Grow by Laura Sandefer, which gives a comprehensive look at Acton Academy’s philosophy and why it’s changing the landscape of education. We’re more than happy to answer any questions or provide insights into the Acton journey.
