Hi there! I’m Katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

Graham’s Eighth Month

This post is a massive one! Technically, Graham ended his 8th month on the 23rd of December, but in order to not get overwhelmed in January, I decided to include CHRISTMAS in this post. Hence the reason there are so many images! This eighth month with Graham has been our most fun yet. He’s coming out of his shell and is so engaging and smiley. He’s attached to me but he will go to anyone. We know that can change on a dime so we’re enjoying the fact that he loves being held by everyone now! It feels sad for me to write this, but we missed a week of his eighth month because we went on a trip to Hawaii and while it was an incredible trip and I know it was so good for us to get away, I love this little boy so much that it was hard to leave.

Behind the Scenes | 2019

  • The Real Life of a Wedding Photographer

I feel like this Behind the Scenes post could mostly just be a “BTS of Michael” post because he’s in the majority of the images. I had a lot of things stacked against me showing up in the majority of the BTS post this year. 1. I had a baby just weeks before our season began and the LAST thing I want is to see pictures of myself from bad angles when I’m still working on the baby-weight situation! 2. When we’re working on a wedding day AND filming a wedding day for our KJ ALL ACCESS students, it’s easy for BTS shots to get overlooked! There is so much going on! and 3. We are only shooting ten weddings a year and so there aren’t a bazillion opportunities to capture BTS like there used to be when we were shooting 35+ weddings a year!

Best of 2019

  • Wedding & Engagement Pictures

I remember being so worried that when I had kids and didn’t shoot 30+ weddings a year that I would lose my touch as a photographer and I would never create work that I was really proud of! It’s an interesting experience to have done a craft for over 10 years and to have the skills to capture what I hope to capture…. and yet force myself to think beyond what I know works and be creative!
