1. RF 28-70mm f/2.0L: My Go-To Lens
Let’s kick things off with the RF 28-70mm f/2.0L, a lens I rely on about 90% of the time. This lens is nearly perfect for my needs. Why? It combines the best of both worlds: the speed and sharpness of a prime lens with the versatility of a zoom. It’s fast, sharp, and allows me to shoot at f/2.0, giving me that beautiful depth of field.
This lens has replaced my need for a collection of primes like the 50mm, 85mm, and 35mm. It’s a game-changer, allowing me to capture a wide range of moments without the hassle of constantly switching lenses. However, it does have a downside: the abundance of options can sometimes limit my compositional creativity. Having too many choices can be overwhelming, and I’ve found that it’s essential to remain mindful of that.
2. RF 85mm f/1.2L: The Magic Maker
Next up is the RF 85mm f/1.2L. While I don’t use this lens as often as I should, when I do, it’s pure magic. The compression and clarity it offers for portraits are unmatched. If you’re looking to achieve that creamy background and sharp subject separation, this lens is where it’s at.
It’s essential to have space when using the 85mm, as it’s not as versatile in tight settings. However, when I have the room to work, I love to pull this lens out to elevate the epic moments. It’s not a necessity for every wedding photographer, but if you want to replicate my style, this lens will help you achieve that signature look.
3. RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro: The Detail Capturer
Moving on to the RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro. I have to be honest; while it’s a solid lens, it didn’t blow me away. I switched from the EF version to the RF primarily to eliminate the adapter, but I find it performs similarly to its predecessor. I mainly use the macro for bridal details, like rings and small intricate shots, but I only pull it out for a few moments during the day.
It’s unfortunate that I have to carry this lens around for just a few shots, but it does provide a unique perspective that you can’t replicate with other lenses. For those considering alternatives, I wouldn’t recommend using a macro adapter. If you’re serious about wedding photography, a dedicated macro lens is worth the investment.
4. RF 70-200mm f/2.8L: The Ceremony Essential
Last but not least is the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L. This lens doesn’t see a lot of action in my bag, but it’s crucial for larger ceremonies. It allows me to get those tight shots of the couple during vows and capture the emotional reactions of family members from a distance.
While I may not use it at every wedding, I’d feel uneasy not having it on hand. The RF version is significantly lighter and more compact than the EF version, making it easier to carry around. If you’re a fan of the 70-200mm range, investing in the RF version is a wise choice.
