The Importance of Location
Location plays a crucial role in this. During a recent wedding, there was a beautiful willow tree but I initially struggled with the composition due to surrounding distractions.

Recognizing Composition Issues
Composition can either make or break an image.. In the initial setup, there were several composition-related issues that needed addressing:
- Visible road lines causing distraction
- Dead tree branches disrupting flow
- Overexposed elements in the background
Refining the Composition
To enhance the composition even more, I continued to workshop the image and look for ways to use all of the natural elements to my advantage! Some of these included:
- Remove distracting background elements
- Ensure the couple is the focal point
- Use leading lines to guide the viewer’s eye
Taking It to the Next Level
After refining the composition and lighting, I explored even tighter shots. This approach added depth and intimacy to the portraits! During a wedding day, the veil is an easy ‘prop’ to create lead lines!
