Photography is an art that thrives on creativity and technique. If you don’t have the basics of lighting and posing down, this tip won’t work- but if you’re looking to elevate your style, this is for you!!
Composition is the backbone of any great photograph. It determines how elements within the frame interact and guide the viewer’s eye. A well-composed image can convey emotion, tell a story, and create a sense of depth and movement. The technique we’ll discuss focuses on making your compositions more dynamic and engaging by utilizing simple adjustments in your shooting strategy.
At its core, the technique involves changing your shooting angle and position to create more dramatic compositions. This can be as simple as squatting down or moving closer to your subjects to change the perspective. It’s about thinking creatively and seeing the scene from a different viewpoint.
During a recent wedding shoot, I implemented this technique to capture stunning images. The couple had envisioned their photos against a beautiful mountain backdrop. However, when I arrived, I realized the mountains were more like rolling hills, which could have been a letdown. But I knew that with the right approach, I could still create epic shots.
Initially, I took standard portraits of the couple, which were fine but lacked the impact I wanted. The light was decent, and the poses were good, but the composition didn’t stand out. I felt the pressure to deliver something that would truly wow them.
Recognizing that the compositions weren’t working, I decided to change my approach. The key was to simplify the scene and focus on the couple. Here’s how I executed the technique:
The result was a stunning photograph that not only featured the couple beautifully but also showcased the landscape in a way that felt epic. The clouds added depth to the sky, and the composition guided the viewer’s eye directly to the subjects, making the image captivating.
Here are some key elements that contributed to the success of the shot:
This technique is versatile and can be applied to various photography scenarios, not just weddings. Whether you’re shooting portraits, landscapes, or events, consider how a simple change in angle or position can elevate your images.
In photography, the smallest adjustments can lead to significant improvements. So next time you’re out shooting, try squatting down, changing your angle, or simplifying the scene. You might just find that your photos become epic.
