Who doesn’t love the sparkler exit photo as the couple is sent off after their wedding?! It’s a classic! However, the traditional sparkler exit can often lead to challenges that can easily be avoided. This is where the concept of a controlled sparkler exit comes in!
A controlled sparkler exit is an organized send-off that typically occurs earlier in the evening, often with just the bridal party and close family members. Unlike a traditional exit that happens at the end of the night, a controlled exit allows for better planning and execution!
I know some couples might think this is a waste of time, but there are so many perks!
As a wedding photographer, it’s crucial to communicate the value of a controlled exit to your clients. Here are some strategies to effectively convey this idea:
Instead of referring to it as a “staged” or “faux” exit, use terms like “controlled exit.” This emphasizes the organized and thoughtful nature of the send-off rather than implying it’s less authentic!
Introduce the concept of a controlled exit during the initial planning stages. This allows couples to incorporate it into their timeline and discuss it with their wedding planner, ensuring everyone is on the same page!
Make sure to explain the benefits clearly. Emphasize how a controlled exit can save them money on extended photography coverage and ensure they receive stunning images without the stress of managing a large crowd.
Create a Bridal Guide that includes information about controlled exits. This can serve as a reference for couples as they plan their wedding, making it easier to remember the advantages of this option.
Once your clients are on board with the idea of a controlled sparkler exit, it’s time to plan the execution. Here are steps to ensure everything goes smoothly:
Ensure that all vendors involved in the wedding day are informed about the controlled exit. This includes the wedding planner, DJ, and any other key personnel. Everyone should understand the plan to avoid confusion on the day of the event!
Identify a few key members of the bridal party who can help gather everyone for the exit. Having a few vocal leaders can streamline the process, ensuring that the couple isn’t left waiting unnecessarily.
Prior to the exit, make sure to establish the desired location and set up any necessary equipment, such as lighting. Testing the lighting before the couple arrives will ensure you are ready to capture the moment perfectly.
Limit the exit to the bridal party and close family. This creates a more intimate atmosphere and allows for better control over the shots. Avoid having the DJ announce the exit unless it’s absolutely necessary, as this can lead to chaos.
Choose longer-burning sparklers to allow ample time for the couple to run through and pose for photos. Avoid using sparklers that produce a lot of smoke, as this can hinder visibility and affect photo quality.
Take advantage of the controlled environment by encouraging the couple to try different poses and interactions. They can run through the sparklers, dip, kiss, or even playfully interact with their friends during the exit.
Make sure to take multiple shots and angles during the exit. This allows for a variety of images that can capture the joy and excitement of the moment. Use both wide shots to capture the scene and close-ups for intimate moments.
After the exit, take a moment to capture some additional portraits of the couple with their bridal party. This can be a great opportunity to get stunning shots without the rush of a large crowd.

It’s hard to believe that I upgraded to the Canon R6 four years ago! It’s the backbone of my photography, and while it’s been a loyal companion, I’m at a point where I have to ask: is it time for an upgrade? This question comes up a lot, especially from photographers who bought the R6 when it first launched, and many are wondering if the Canon R6MkII is worth the investment.
I am so excited to share today’s Podcast with you!! You will get to hear a powerful conversation I had with my good friend Graham Cochrane!
Some images are good, but others really DRAW you in and make you say WOW! But what are the factors that make an image stand out so much?
