You’re not alone.
I’ve coached hundreds of entrepreneurs over the years (not just photographers!), and I can tell you that what keeps most people stuck isn’t strategy. It’s perception.
People don’t buy because your offer is great. They buy because of what they feel when they see your brand.
In this week’s episode of Doing Life Differently, I’m sharing something deeply personal and vulnerable: a real coaching conversation with one of our students who is in the thick of a really hard season.
She’s navigating grief, health issues, and personal loss—and in the middle of it all, she’s wondering:
“How do I show up when I feel like I’m falling apart?”
And maybe you’ve asked that question too.
The Lie We Tell Ourselves in the Dark
This student bravely opened up about her fear of vulnerability, and how for most of her life, people labeled her as “strong.”
But inside? She didn’t feel strong. She felt broken.
Her words?
“I don’t want to get on social media and be like, ‘Hey guys, my heart’s broken.’”
And listen, I’ve been there.
I am there sometimes.
There have been seasons in my life of burying a child, collapsing from anaphylaxis, navigating chaos behind the scenes—where I’ve had to completely disappear from the spotlight because I just didn’t have it in me to pretend everything was okay.
And that’s okay.
If I had shown up in that season, it wouldn’t have been authentic—because I was barely surviving. I wasn’t ready to show up for the world.
Your Brand Doesn’t Have to Be Built From the Broken Place
One of the most healing moments in this coaching conversation was when we looked at all the stories this student already had.
Stories of rebellion, grit, and purpose.
Stories of why she picked up a camera.
Stories of taking in a foster son and choosing to be the one behind the camera capturing his life because no one else would.
During our call together I listened to her and said, “I have a whole list here… you have a 10-part story about your passion. You could share twice a week and have months of content!”
She thought she had nothing to say.
What she actually had was a powerful, personal brand waiting to be lived out.
You’re More Ready Than You Think
If you’re in a hard season and you’re thinking, “There’s no way I can market right now…”
Please hear me say this:
You don’t have to share your open wounds.
You can show up with honesty and still protect the sacred.
You can build a brand with what’s already inside of you.
And you don’t have to feel strong to actually be strong.
Like I told her on the call…
“The fact that you’re here, on a coaching call, still pushing for your business… that’s strength.”
