Your Brand Has a Voice—Even When You’re Quiet

Most business owners think branding is about fonts, colors, or a logo. And while those things matter, they aren’t the heartbeat of your business.

The truth is—your brand is saying something every day, even when you’re not actively marketing.

If you’re an entrepreneur who’s taken a social break or slowed down on posting, this post is for you.

Because silence still speaks.

What story is your brand telling when you’re not showing up?

What Is a Personal Brand—Really?

Your personal brand is not your Instagram bio or a curated highlight reel.

A personal brand is the reputation people build about you based on the tiny, consistent ways you show up (or don’t).

And that perception directly impacts trust…which directly impacts your bottom line!

Personal branding isn’t about being an influencer.

It’s about letting people see you (the real, human, slightly messy you!) so they can believe that working with you will be just as personal and trustworthy.

Without meaning to, I started building a personal brand in 2008. I wasn’t polished, I wasn’t strategic at all! I was just consistent and real. And that made all the difference!

But this isn’t just a superpower limited to a few people.

I truly believe that any one can use their story for purpose and impact in their brand.

Why Silence Is Still a Message

If you think you don’t have a brand right now, think again.

That “quiet season” you’re in?

It might be telling people your business has slowed down or shut down.

Meanwhile, the truth could be that you’re fully booked and running full speed behind the scenes!!

The disconnect? It comes from not showing up with intentionality—and that’s fixable.

The 5% Rule for Personal Branding

Most business owners hesitate to build a personal brand because they think it means oversharing. That’s not true!!

You really only need to share 5% of your life with intentionality to create connection.

That could look like:

  • Your favorite coffee mug and why it matters to you
  • What you’re growing in your messy backyard garden
  • A confession that you hate blueberries

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being human.

Real Stories That Built Real Connection

Let me give you a few examples of how I’ve done this in my own brand, without trying to “strategize” it.

One of the most memorable blog posts I’ve ever written?

A recap of a chaotic houseboat vacation with 20 people, 5 coolers, and zero luxury.

It had nothing to do with with my business, but people still bring it up!!

Why? Because it gave them a fuller, funnier, more human view of me.

I also talk about little things—like being overwhelmed by all the legos on the floor. These may seem trivial, but they make me relatable. They remind people I’m human. That’s the stuff people connect to. These are the things that other moms reply to and say “Oh, me too!”

And most recently?

I shared about being diagnosed with Alpha-Gal Syndrome after a tick bite. How I nearly died after eating a steak, and how I found healing.

It had nothing to do with my business… but everything to do with trust.

My audience now knows I’m a real woman walking through hard things, and that makes my brand multidimensional.

So, what’s your version of the houseboat story? The legos? The diagnosis you didn’t ask for but lived through anyway?

Your life isn’t a distraction from your brand.
It’s the very thing that makes your brand magnetic.

How to Start Showing Up On Purpose

So, where do you begin if you want to start showing up more intentionally, without the overwhelm or perfectionism? Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Take inventory.

Scroll back through your last 6 weeks of content and ask: What would a stranger assume about me based on what I’ve shared? If it feels off, disconnected, or not quite “you” anymore—that’s great insight. Awareness is your starting place.

  1. Pick just one thing to share.

You don’t have to post a whole life update! Choose one simple detail about your real life: a preference, a moment, a quirk, and share it this week. Just keep it totally YOU!

  1. Grab the free Reflection Journal

I created a short journal (plus audio coaching!) that goes with this episode to help you process what your brand is currently saying and how to gently shift that message to be more honest and aligned.

Let this be the nudge that reminds you: you don’t have to show up constantly. But when you do show up, make it count!!

Final Thought: Your Story Is the Strategy

You don’t need a huge following or a fancy website or thousands of story views to build a brand that matters. You just need to show up on purpose, not by accident!!

When you do?

People will start to recognize you. Not just for what you offer, but for who you are.

They’ll start to feel like they know you.

They’ll start to trust you.

And that trust? That’s what makes someone stop scrolling, lean in, and buy from you!

So don’t wait to become someone different. Start showing up as who you already are, even if it’s just 5%.

Your story isn’t a distraction from your brand.

It’s the very heart of it. Let it lead!
