I equip purpose-driven entrepreneurs and photographers to turn their story into connection—and their gifts into lasting impact.

hey friends, i'm katelyn

Today, I’m diving into an experience that was nothing like I anticipated: my digital detox in December. If you’ve ever considered taking a break from the noise of the online world, you might relate to my journey—the good, the surprising, and the, well, completely unplanned.

Let’s break it down. I’ll share what I did, what I expected, what actually happened, and what I learned.

Why I Chose a Digital Detox

At the beginning of December, I realized I needed to simplify the noise in my life. My goal was clear: to create uninterrupted memories with my family during the holiday season. I envisioned cozy evenings reading books, going to bed without my phone lighting up the room, and simply being present. No endless scrolling. No distractions. Just better habits and meaningful moments.

The Reality vs. My Expectations

Let me tell you—December didn’t exactly go as planned.

What I Thought Would Happen

I pictured myself thriving in this detox. Peaceful evenings, lots of quality time, and a noticeable shift in my habits. I thought ditching my phone would be hard at first but would quickly lead to a serene, distraction-free life.

What Actually Happened

Here’s where things got real. Yes, I made memories with my family, and yes, I spent less time on my phone. But the process wasn’t as smooth as I imagined. There were days when the pull of checking notifications was stronger than I expected. And let’s not even talk about the sheer inconvenience of not having my phone for things like recipes or quick directions.

More than that, I discovered how ingrained my habits were. Reaching for my phone in idle moments had become second nature. Letting go of that wasn’t easy, and there were moments I felt disconnected—not in the refreshing way I’d hoped but in a way that felt like I was missing something.

The Unexpected Gifts

Here’s the twist: while the detox didn’t unfold perfectly, it came with gifts I never saw coming.

  1. Increased Awareness of My Habits Without my phone, I became keenly aware of how often I used it as a crutch—to fill silences, escape boredom, or avoid being fully present. This awareness was humbling but empowering.
  2. Rediscovered Joy in Simplicity Small, everyday moments became more vivid. Playing with my daughter, having uninterrupted conversations, or just sitting with my thoughts—these moments felt fuller, more meaningful.
  3. A New Perspective on Connection Ironically, disconnecting helped me see where true connection lies. It’s not in the likes, comments, or stories; it’s in being present for the people right in front of you.

What I Learned

This digital detox taught me that perfection isn’t the goal. It’s about progress and mindfulness. Here are my biggest takeaways:

  • Detoxing is Hard—and That’s Okay: It’s a process, not an instant fix. And even small steps can make a big difference.
  • Setting Boundaries Matters: I didn’t need to ditch my phone entirely; I just needed to create intentional boundaries.
  • Embrace the Imperfection: Life doesn’t have to look like a perfectly curated Instagram post to be meaningful.

Will I Do It Again?

Absolutely. While it wasn’t easy, the benefits outweighed the challenges. Next time, though, I’ll set clearer goals and give myself more grace when things don’t go as planned.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the noise of the digital world, I encourage you to try your own version of a digital detox. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Start small, stay mindful, and let yourself discover the unexpected gifts along the way.

Until next time, keep doing life differently.
