hey friends, i'm katelyn

This week, Michael is sitting down with me at the microphone to join me on the podcast! When we started our Acton Academy journey, we had big dreams and very little idea of the practical challenges that lay ahead. Today, in year three of running our own Acton Academy, Michael and I are thrilled to reflect on the incredible transformation we’ve seen in our learners, our community, and even our own perspectives on education.

What is Acton Academy?

Acton Academy is a unique, learner-driven school model that encourages students to be in charge of their own education. With no tests, grades, or traditional teachers, Acton operates on a philosophy that prioritizes independence, resilience, and character development in young learners. Instead of teachers, Acton has “guides,” who are not allowed to answer students’ questions directly. This approach empowers learners to take ownership of their journey, exploring resources, and leaning on each other rather than an authority figure.

Each day starts with a Socratic discussion, fostering critical thinking and respectful communication, followed by individual goal-setting for core skills like reading, math, and writing. This setup helps learners set their own benchmarks for success and hold themselves accountable, developing life skills that extend far beyond academics.

Why We Chose Acton: A Different Kind of Education

Our search for a new approach to education was sparked by our desire to find a school environment that encouraged creativity, independence, and self-motivation. We wanted a space where our children—and other children in the community—could learn at their own pace, explore their natural curiosity, and grow in an environment free from the constraints of traditional schooling.

In Acton, we found a model that fit this vision perfectly. Inspired by Courage to Grow, a book by Acton co-founder Laura Sandefer, we felt a profound sense of connection to Acton’s approach. It resonated with our desire for a balanced learning environment where academic achievement is valued, but equally important is the development of character, empathy, and grit.

Year Three: Building Confidence in Acton’s Approach

As we reflect on the first three years of running our Acton Academy, it’s incredible to see how much has changed—and how much we’ve learned!! Initially, we had to adapt to a new way of thinking about education, letting go of many preconceived notions. We questioned whether this approach would truly work and if our learners would thrive in this unstructured format. But as we enter year three, we are seeing the impact of Acton’s method and are more confident than ever.

Here are some major highlights from our journey so far:

  1. Self-Directed Learning Works
In the Acton environment, each child learns to take responsibility for their own journey. By setting and tracking goals independently, our learners are developing skills for time management, critical thinking, and collaboration. It’s incredible to see learners excited about meeting their goals in reading, math, or any area that sparks their interest. They are learning that education isn’t something that happens to them—it’s something they actively pursue.
  2. Failing Safely and Growing from Mistakes
One of the cornerstones of Acton is creating a safe environment for children to fail “cheaply, early, and often.” In traditional settings, children may avoid risks to prevent mistakes, but at Acton, failure is viewed as an essential part of learning. For instance, during exhibitions, learners present projects or challenges they’ve worked on. If they haven’t adequately prepared, the result is obvious, and they experience a natural consequence. However, because this happens in a supportive community, learners learn to adapt, persevere, and improve.
  3. A Parent’s Role at Acton
Parents at Acton are encouraged to act as coaches, not rescuers, allowing their children to navigate challenges independently. In year three, we see a significant shift in the community’s mindset. By stepping back, parents witness firsthand the growth and maturity that comes from allowing their children to face obstacles on their own.
  4. Community as a Core Value
One of the most rewarding parts of our Acton journey has been building a community of like-minded families. Through regular events like parent coffees, family brunches, and parent-led social gatherings, Acton has fostered a sense of community among families who share similar values. This has allowed for deep connections and support networks, reinforcing our commitment to the Acton approach.
  5. Cultivating Character and Resilience
Acton’s emphasis on character development and interpersonal skills is one of its greatest strengths. Learners practice daily reflections, engage in discussions that encourage them to take a stand, and use tools like the peace table to resolve conflicts. Acton has taught our learners how to navigate social situations, manage their emotions, and work collaboratively—all essential skills that will serve them well beyond school.

The Future of Our Acton Academy

With three years under our belt, we’re excited for the future and have big dreams for expanding our Acton Academy. Currently, we’re working to find a larger campus to accommodate more learners as we continue to grow. Our ultimate goal is to create a sustainable, learner-driven environment for students from elementary through high school, allowing them to experience the Acton model throughout their formative years.

We’re proud of how far we’ve come, from that initial vision inspired by Courage to Grow to the thriving community we have today. For any parent questioning the traditional education path, we encourage you to consider Acton and its commitment to lifelong learning, personal responsibility, and character development. Whether you’re looking to join an Acton school or simply exploring alternative education models, know that there’s a place where children are encouraged to be curious, resilient, and genuinely excited to learn.

Considering Acton? Here’s How to Learn More

If this sounds like the right approach for your child, we highly recommend reading Courage to Grow by Laura Sandefer, which gives a comprehensive look at Acton Academy’s philosophy and why it’s changing the landscape of education. We’re more than happy to answer any questions or provide insights into the Acton journey.
