44 | Authenticity Over Perfection

Building a Brand That Truly Connects

filed in:

Personal Branding

If you’re looking to build a personal brand that genuinely connects with people, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a creative, or just someone looking for more purpose in life, I think these insights will resonate with you.

In the episode, I talked about how I’ve built my business by doing things differently, and one of the key principles that has shaped my brand is choosing authenticity over perfection. Here’s what I’ve learned and how you can apply these ideas to your own brand-building journey!

1. Why I Chose Authenticity Over Perfection

I used to think that in order to be successful, everything needed to be perfect—my photos, my social media posts, even my website. But over time, I realized that people don’t want perfect—they want real. My audience connected with me more when I started sharing the messy parts of my journey, whether it was a behind-the-scenes look at a challenging shoot or balancing life as a mom and business owner.

Being authentic doesn’t mean being unprofessional. It means showing up as your true self and letting people see the person behind the brand. For me, it’s about sharing the highs and the lows, the successes and the struggles. People don’t just relate to my work; they relate to my story. That’s where the real connection happens.

Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to show the imperfect parts of your journey. Authenticity builds trust, and trust is the foundation of any lasting brand!

2. Embracing Vulnerability to Build Stronger Connections

I’ve found that vulnerability is a powerful tool in building a personal brand. When I co-founded a school that’s now doubling in size each year, it wasn’t because we had all the answers. It was because we were open about learning along the way. Sharing your process—even the messy middle—can draw people in. It’s relatable because no one has everything figured out.

One thing I try to do in both my photography business and my education platform is to keep it real. Whether I’m talking about a mistake I made on a shoot or a difficult decision in the business, I’ve learned that being vulnerable and honest with my audience has created stronger connections.

Takeaway: Vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. When you let people in on your journey, they root for you and your brand even more.

3. Consistency Through My Core Values

Another key element that has helped me build a brand people trust is staying consistent with my core values. For me, it’s all about purpose, faith, and family. These aren’t just words I throw around—they’re values I try to infuse into everything I do. From my photography to my podcast to the school I co-founded, I make sure my actions and content reflect what I stand for.

Consistency is key in building a recognizable and trusted brand. When your audience knows what you value and see you living those values consistently, they feel connected to you. For example, I make sure my educational content, whether in a course or a freebie, aligns with my goal to help others live more intentionally and purposefully.

Takeaway: Know your core values and make sure they show up consistently in everything you do. It’s how you build a brand that people feel connected to on a deeper level.

4. Your Personal Brand Is an Extension of Who You Are

Ultimately, what I’ve learned over the years is that your personal brand should be an extension of who you are, not a version of who you think people want you to be. When I first started, I spent a lot of time worrying about what others expected from me. But once I let go of those expectations and leaned into what made me, me, things started to fall into place.

My podcast is a reflection of my journey—both the business side and the personal. It’s about showing people that you can build something meaningful without following the same old rules. By staying true to myself and letting that authenticity shine through, I’ve been able to create a brand that feels genuine and resonates with my audience.

Takeaway: Your brand is a reflection of you. The more you lean into what makes you unique, the more your audience will connect with your brand.

Building an authentic personal brand is about showing up as your true self, embracing vulnerability, and staying consistent with your core values. It’s not always easy, but I can tell you from experience that it’s worth it. People want to connect with real humans, not polished perfection. And when you build that trust through authenticity, you create a brand that stands out and lasts.

If you’re ready to take the next step in building a brand that truly connects, I encourage you to start by reflecting on what makes you you and how you can bring more of that into your work. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being real.
