The Doing Life Differently Podcast

48 | How We’re Taking Steps Towards A Healthier Home

Don’t do it all at once!

filed in:

Wellness & Life Podcast

In today’s world, the idea of a “healthy home” can feel overwhelming. With constant information about toxins, processed foods, and environmental risks, it’s easy to feel defeated before you even start. So I’m sharing our journey and the small, impactful steps we’ve taken towards a healthier home.

Understanding the Importance of Reducing Toxins

Our journey started from a place of curiosity and necessity. We noticed certain health struggles within our family—issues like persistent skin conditions, sensitivities, and even behavioral shifts—that sparked a deeper look into our environment and diet. We learned that our bodies have limits to how many toxins they can handle before issues start to appear, which experts refer to as a “toxic load.” Realizing that we could support our family’s health by reducing this load helped guide our approach! If you haven’t listened to the episodes where I talk about the health struggles we were experiencing in our son, you can listen to them HERE!

Step 1: Focus on Food First

One of the most impactful steps to creating a healthier home is reevaluating what goes into our bodies. For our family, we began with food additives, specifically dyes. Studies suggest that artificial dyes can affect behavior and health, especially in children. We started swapping out dye-filled snacks for natural options, and the difference was remarkable!

Our advice to anyone looking to make changes in their home is to start with one food ingredient that you feel comfortable addressing. This small switch can make a big difference and set the tone for future changes. For us, we later moved on to cutting out high fructose corn syrup, and eventually, we began choosing organic products wherever possible.

Step 2: Simplify Household Products

From cleaning supplies to laundry detergent, our homes are filled with products that contain chemicals. Switching to natural, non-toxic alternatives was another big step toward a healthier home. We began with detergents and household cleaners, opting for brands that are free from harsh chemicals. This choice felt like a positive step, especially for our children, who spend so much time in contact with household surfaces.

One of our favorite swaps has been Truly Free detergent. Not only has it been a clean alternative, but we’ve also found it to be effective for sensitive skin. Little by little, these changes add up to a significant reduction in our household’s toxic load.

Step 3: Create Healthier Habits Gradually

One of the most important lessons we’ve learned on this journey is that change doesn’t have to happen all at once. It’s easy to feel discouraged by the sheer volume of information out there, but we focused on taking small steps. Choosing one product to replace or one food item to switch can lead to manageable progress. The goal is to create healthier habits that last rather than overhauling everything overnight, which can often feel overwhelming and unsustainable!

Step 4: Involve Your Family

Healthier changes are more likely to stick when everyone is on board. We made an effort to teach our children why we were making these changes, from opting for dye-free snacks to understanding why we use non-toxic cleaners. This helps them understand the “why” behind our choices, and it’s empowered them to make better decisions, too.

A simple tip is to talk openly with your family about the benefits of healthier choices and even let them pick out new snacks or products they want to try. This inclusion makes the journey toward a low-tox home feel like a team effort.

Step 5: Celebrate the Wins

Our health journey has brought us countless challenges and triumphs, and each change—no matter how small—felt like a victory. Creating a healthier home doesn’t happen overnight, but every small win makes a difference!

Reflecting on the steps we’ve taken to make our home healthier brings me so much joy, knowing our family is supported by a cleaner environment. If you’re ready to take that first step, know that there is no “perfect” solution; start small and celebrate the progress.

Building a Healthier Home is a Journey

As we continue on this journey, I’m constantly reminded that the path to a low-tox home is unique for every family. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but small, intentional changes can lead to a healthier, happier life. Whether you’re considering reducing additives in food or swapping out cleaning products, remember that every step counts.

We hope our story can help inspire you to take steps toward a healthier home that feels manageable, positive, and impactful for your family.
