Hi there! I’m Katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

Preparing for an Eshoot

  • Ask Anything

really hard to believe that I have NEVER posted a blog post about how to prep for your engagement session. To be honest, I think the reason I have never posted about this is because I have never needed to. My brides are really good about picking out outfits and letting their groom know what to expect. However, I have received several emails from other photographers asking how I prep my couples for engagements and so I thought a blog post may be helpful for not only photographers but for brides as well!

Downtown Chicago | Lincoln Park Engagement Session

  • Ryan + Paige | Engaged

are some posts that I just don’t know where to start. This would be one of them! I remember laying in the bed at our cousin’s lake house with Paige and talking about all the things that teenage girls talk about. Driving, clothes, high school and of course….boys. I actually don’t have any “real” cousins… Paige is my second cousin once removed and so we refer to each other as our “Cousin Squared”…. once again, we came up with that when we were in our teens and at the time, it was hilarious to us. :) Anyway, I didn’t have any real cousins growing up but 12 years ago, we drove out to Chicago for Paige’s sister’s wedding and Paige and I just “clicked”.

A Downtown Anniversary Shoot

  • Mike + Alison | Married

and I have this thing about couples. We love working with new couples, we love meeting new couples…. overall we just love LOVE them! It’s fun to get to know other couples our age and hear their story. Well, in Vegas last year, I hosted a little mini posing workshop at the crack of dawn one morning. We met some really awesome people that trip but like every trip, there are some new friends that just stand out to you. The Mishes were that couple this past year. I remember Michael going through our list of workshop attendees and saying “Aw, they’re a cute couple!!”. Well after meeting them in real life, not only were they cute, they were so sweet and incredibly genuine.
